Introduction

Monolith, formerly known as TokenCard, aimed to create a decentralised smart contract wallet that seamlessly integrates with a debit card. This allows users to spend their cryptocurrencies while retaining full control of their private keys. This objective was designed to provide users with more control of their wallet compared to typical POA (plain old address) wallets. In May 2017, Monolith successfully raised almost $17 million in funding within 30 minutes through an initial coin offering (ICO).

Objective

The main objective was to bridge the gap between the traditional banking system and the emerging world of Decentralised Finance (DeFi). Monolith sought to make the complexities of DeFi more accessible and usable, allowing users to spend their crypto assets in real-world contexts.

Research and Discovery

Through competitor analysis and user research, it was found that many users were hesitant to read extensive information during the app sign-up process. This insight informed the development of an onboarding process and wider UI that was visually engaging and light on text, making it easier for users to digest.

Design Solutions

With the complexity of DeFi in mind, a clean and minimal user interface was created. The app uses clear illustrations and iconography to make complex actions more understandable, resulting in a user-friendly and frictionless experience.

Branding and Style Guide

Monolith views the crypto community as pioneers exploring the new frontier of finance. This ethos was embedded into the branding, creating a sense of adventure and discovery for both new and existing users. A comprehensive style guide was developed to ensure the brand's visual identity was used consistently and effectively across all communication channels.

Product Development

To solve the everyday spending issue prevalent among cryptocurrency users, Monolith developed a unique solution. Their decentralised banking alternative allows users in the UK and EEA to convert Ethereum and other ERC-20 tokens into fiat currency, which can be loaded onto a Visa debit card and spent wherever Visa is accepted

Events and Community Engagement

At Devcon 2019, Monolith sought to make a strong impression. They brought their brand to life with a vibrant and memorable display, showcasing their products and values on a grand scale.

Conclusion

Through innovative design and development, Monolith has created a unique solution that connects the worlds of traditional finance and DeFi. Their decentralised banking alternative, characterised by a user-friendly interface and strong branding, offers a practical and secure way for users to spend their crypto assets. This project has not only made a significant impact on user convenience but has also strengthened Monolith's position as a leader in the crypto community.
